Baseball Completes Sweep of Berea 14-1 in Seven Innings

NEED TO KNOW:
Score: Piedmont 14, Berea 1 F/7
Records: Piedmont, 20-6; Berea 7-15

BEREA, Ky. – The Piedmont College baseball team completed the sweep of Berea College Sunday with a 14-1 win in seven innings. The win marked the 10th time this season Piedmont has scored in double digits and gave the Lions their 20th win of the season.

The Lions worked quickly with three runs in the top of the first with all the damage coming with two outs. BRADY BALLSTADT singled, ANDREW BURDEN was walked and TYLER BURDETTE singled to bring in the first run. JONATHEN BURKETT would single and drive in two more to make it 3-0 for MAX BENING when he took the mound.

Bening allowed a leadoff double and an error allowed him to score later in the frame. That was the only run the Mountaineers would manage though as Bening tossed five innings without an earned run allowing three hits and striking out three batters.

Piedmont used extra-base hits to score two more in the third inning as Ballstadt doubled then Burden traded places with him. EVAN MEADE did one better with a triple to drive in Burden and the Lions led 5-1.

With a 6-1 lead going into the seventh inning, Piedmont broke open the contest with eight runs in the inning to lead 14-1 and won by run rule for the second time in the series. The Lions' eight runs in the seventh came on four hits and one error with four walks.

Up next, Piedmont will have a road midweek matchup with Emory Wednesday at 3 p.m.

TURNING POINT:
-- The Lions set the tone early with three runs in the first inning but it was again big innings that did the Mountaineers in as Piedmont scored eight to slam the door in the seventh inning.

NEWS AND NOTES:
-- This is the 12th straight season the Lions have had 20 or more wins.
