ANDREW CHITTY delivered a 6-0, 6-0 win to push the Piedmont men's tennis team past Brevard on Monday night in the Lions' 2019 season debut.
Piedmont was on the verge of losing as Brevard led 4-2 with three matches remaining.
The Lions led 2-1 after doubles play before the Tornados raced back to take No. 1-3 singles.
Freshman
JARRETT GRAY started the comeback by blanking his opponent 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles before sophomore
CHASE MORRIS delivered the same performance at No. 5, winning 6-0, 6-0.
All the pressure fell on Chitty as the senior produced a dominate win to help the Lions earn the win in the season opener.
HARRISON LABOLLITA (No. 2) and
HOUSTON MEDLOCK (No. 3) each fell in three sets after winning the first set.
Monday night also saw head coach Dick Stockton earn his first win as a Lion.
In doubles, the No. 3 duo of Medlock and Morris gave Piedmont the game's first point with an 8-0 win.
The No. 1 pairing of
KANLER CUMBASS and Gray fell 8-5 as the No. 2 team of Chitty and LaBollita won 8-7, taking a 7-5 tiebreaker.
Standout Performances
-- Gray, Morris and Chitty each earned 6-0, 6-0 wins in singles play.
