RALEIGH, N.C. – The Piedmont College men's basketball team provided fans with a thrilling finish Tuesday claiming a 96-93 win over William Peace. The Pacers led by two with 1:12 to play but the Lions scored the final five points to claim the victory.
The Lions trailed by as many as 15 with just over 10:00 to go in the contest but used a late rally to complete the comeback. Trailing 81-66, Piedmont used a 12-2 run to cut the lead to five with just under 7:00 to go.
The Piedmont defense held the Pacers to just three baskets from the floor over the final 10:00 of play and a total of just 12 points.
Piedmont trailed 50-41 at the half after a close game through much of the opening period. The Pacers used a late run to pull away before the break, but Piedmont kept fighting in the second half.
The Lions cut the lead to five on a layup by
MILES RILEY making it 56-51, but the Pacers ran it back to nine points with 14:46 to play. Despite trailing by 15 points with 10:10 on the clock, Piedmont continued to chip away and took their first lead of the second half with 4:01 remaining.
The Pacers totaled 18 offensive rebounds to Piedmont's four with William Peace adding 19 second chance points while Piedmont had two.
Three Lions scored in double figures led by Miley Riley with a career-high 25 points to lead all scorers.
Up next, the Lions have their final game before Christmas break at Pfeiffer Wednesday at 2 p.m.
TURNING POINT:
--Piedmont held the Pacers to only free throws in the final 3:30 of the game.
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
--The Lions had three players score 20 or more points led by
MILES RILEY's 25 points, a career-high for the senior.
--
JORDAN FOOTE tied a career-high with 24 points while
ANDREW STIMPSON set a career-best with 20 points.
NEWS AND NOTES:
--Foote's 24 points combined with 14 rebounds for the junior's third double-double of the season.
