Women’s Basketball Opens USA South Play with 60-44 Win at Wesleyan

MACON, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team pulled away for a 60-44 victory at Wesleyan on Sunday afternoon in Macon.
 
The Lady Lions (4-3, 1-0 USA South) started USA South play with a victory thanks to an outstanding defensive effort and a balanced scoring attack.
 
In her second career game for Piedmont, freshman guard COLBY REED led the team with 13 points and knocked down 3 three-pointers for the day. Fellow freshman NAKIYAH WASHINGTON led with 11 rebounds while MAKAYLA SCHYMANSKI scored a season-high eight points.
 
Overall, 12 different players scored for the Lady Lions.
 
After the Wolves jumped out to a 4-2 lead in the game's early minutes, Piedmont responded with a quick 9-2 run to go ahead 11-4 after a Reed three-pointer. The Lady Lions led by as many as nine points late in the first quarter, but a Wesleyan three-pointer before the end of the period gave the Wolves momentum heading into the second.

PC was unable to separate through much of the second period, as the Wolves were able to cut their deficit to three points late in the half. However, the Lady Lions capped the half on a 9-2 run to take a 10-point lead into the locker room.
 
Reed led the team with 10 points on 2-of-2 from beyond the arc in the first half. As a team, the Lady Lions committed 15 first-half turnovers.
 
Senior guard KELLY ACKERMAN knocked down a pair of three-pointers early in the second half as Piedmont continued to lead by double-digits. The Lady Lions led by as many as 16 points in the period and went into the final 10 minutes leading, 47-33.
 
The fourth quarter was more of the same with Wesleyan scoring exactly 11 points for the fourth time in four quarters. Reed's third three-pointer of the contest pushed PC's lead to a game-high 17. The Lady Lions pushed the lead to as much as 20 points midway through the period before going scoreless for the final 3:58 to allow Wesleyan to cut slightly into its deficit.
 
Up next, the Lady Lions will be off for over a week before their USA South home opener on Wednesday, Dec. 4 at 5:30 p.m.
 
TURNING POINT:
- Piedmont closed out the first half on a 9-2 run to take a double-digit lead into the locker room that it held the rest of the way.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- In just her second collegiate game, freshman guard COLBY REED dropped three three-pointers and scored a team-high 13 points.
- Fellow freshman NAKIYAH WASHINGTON added seven points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes.
- Freshman forward MAKAYLA SCHYMANSKI scored a season-high eight points on 3-of-3 shooting in just seven minutes.
