Lady Lions Drop Home Opener 84-67 to Emory

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team dropped its home opener to Emory, 84-67, on Wednesday night at Cave Arena.
 
The Eagles (1-0) used a 19-4 run over the final 4:34 of the first quarter to build a double-digit lead they never relinquished.
 
For the second straight contest, Piedmont (1-2) freshmen EMILY WILEY and NAKIYAH WASHINGTON delivered outstanding performances, with both dropping 16 points to lead the squad.
 
PC held its own early in the first, taking an 11-9 lead before the big Eagles run to end the period.
 
The Lady Lions were able to rally early in the second quarter, as they outscored Emory, 13-3, over the first 3:37 of the period. However, the Eagles responded with a run late in the half to take a 48-40 lead into the locker room.
 
Emory was able to put the game away with a dominant third quarter in which it was able to build a lead as big as 25 points before the Lady Lions closed the gap to under 20 points with a strong fourth quarter.
 
Up next, Piedmont will travel to Danville, Virginia to take part in the Cougar Tip-Off, beginning on Saturday, Nov. 16 with a 12 p.m. matchup against William Peace.
 
TURNING POINT:
- After Piedmont cut its deficit to single digits going into halftime, Emory responded by outscoring the Lady Lions, 23-9, in the third quarter to put the game away.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- Freshman guard EMILY WILEY tied for the team lead with 16 points on 6-of-11 shooting while also adding eight rebounds.
- Freshman forward NAKIYAH WASHINGTON also added 16 points in 24 minutes off the bench.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Eagles outscored the Lady Lions, 42-28, in the paint.
