DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's soccer team opened the 2019 USA South Athletic Conference tournament with a 2-1 decision over Wesleyan College on a rain-filled Wednesday evening.
The Lady Lions (14-6-1) entered Wednesday as the third seed out of the West Division while Wesleyan (4-12-1) was the sixth seed.
KATY BROWN scored the game's first goal in the 42nd minute after finding a
KATELYN SMITH corner kick to give Piedmont a 1-0 lead before halftime.
Piedmont entered the break with a 13-3 shot advantage and 7-1 in corner kicks.
After the break,
AMANDA WEINHART would convert a penalty kick in the 69th to put the Lady Lions ahead 2-0.
Despite the offensive pressure, Piedmont allowed a Wesleyan goal in the 84th, but held off for the remainder of the game to take the win.
MIRANDA MCNALLEY finished the game with three saves while Wesleyan's Carle Dykes made 14 stops.
Piedmont will advance to the quarterfinals of the conference tournament on Saturday. The Lady Lions are scheduled to Salem College at 2 p.m.
