Lady Lions Drop First Conference Game of the Season at Berea

BEREA, Ky. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team snapped its 11-game winning streak and lost its first USA South Athletic Conference game on Saturday, losing 76-49 to Berea College in Seabury Center. 

With the loss, Piedmont and Berea are now tied for first in the USA South West Division. Piedmont defeated Berea 73-47 in early January. 

Berea was led by Bethanie Williams who had a game-high 27 points. Two other Mountaineers scored in double-digit points. 

Piedmont jumped out to a 7-0 lead to begin the first quarter and led 9-3 with just over three minutes left to play before Berea scored six straight to tie the game 9-9 going into the second. 

The Lady Lions scored the first four points in the second thanks to a pair of baskets by HOPE FRANKLIN and never trailed during quarter. Berea would tie the game 15-15 and 22-22, but trailed by four at the halftime break. 

The Mountaineers would come alive in the third quarter and outscored Piedmont 30-10 to lead 52-36 going into the fourth. A pair of BRITTANY WALKER free throws with 6:13 left on the clock gave PC a four-point lead, but Berea closed the quarter with a 23-3 run to take over the game. 

Berea would again dominate the fourth quarter and outscored Piedmont 24-13 to close out the game. 

TURNING POINT:
- Trailing 33-29 during the third quarter, Berea used a 23-3 run to take a 16-point lead. 
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- RACHEL IRBY led Piedmont with 12 points and seven rebounds while AMARI PRICE scored 10 points while adding five rebounds, four assists and four steals. 
 
UP NEXT:
- Piedmont will travel to Wesleyan on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. matchup.
