Lady Lions Split Conference Tri-match v. LaGrange and Covenant

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. -  The Piedmont College volleyball team split a pair of contests Saturday in the first USA South tri-match of the season. The Lady Lions won against LaGrange 3-2 but dropped a 3-0 decision to the host team Covenant. 

Against LaGrange, it took five sets to decide a winner as the two went set-for-set but it proved to be in Piedmont's favor as they took the first set 25-19. In the second, Piedmont built a 19-14 lead, but the Panthers came back to even the match with a 25-21 win. 

Piedmont led 17-10 in the third set, then held on as LaGrange came back from down 24-20 to tie it at 24. It took extra points to decide, but Piedmont outlasted LaGrange for a 28-26 win. The Panthers forced a fifth set with a 25-14 win, but Piedmont claimed the fifth 15-12. 

ALINA ROBERTS led all scorers in the match with 17 kills as Piedmont had three players in double figures as ERICA BALKCUM had 11 kills while TATIANA PAULA added 10. 

The Scots controlled the match throughout with a straight sets 3-0 sweep of Piedmont. It was close throughout as Piedmont lost 25-18, 25-22, 25-18. 

Roberts once again led Piedmont but with just nine kills as the high mark for the Lady Lions. JENNA WENDEL contributed 19 assists with LAINEY CHOINIERE adding 16 digs. 

Turning Point
--Piedmont trailed in the fifth set 12-10 but scored the final five points of the set to take the match. 
--The Scots maintained control throughout for the straight sets sweep. 

Standout Performances
--ALINA ROBERTS recorded 17 kills against LaGrange, a career-high for the sophomore. 
--LAINEY CHOINIERE posted a season-high 32 digs against the Panthers in the first match. 

News & Notes
--The Lady Lions are now 2-1 in conference play with the home opener awaiting Wednesday. 

Up Next
--Piedmont has its home opener Wednesday against Agnes Scott College at 7 p.m. inside Cave Arena.
