Piedmont Softball Splits USA South First Round With Huntingdon

DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont College softball team opened the first round of the USA South Athletic Conference tournament with a split against Huntingdon College on Friday afternoon. 

Game 3 of the series is scheduled for a 2 p.m. start on Saturday, but with rain forecasted for most of the day, it may be played on Sunday.  

The Lady Lions entered the conference tournament as the No. 2 seed while the Hawks entered Friday as the #5 seed in the West Division. 

JOSIE COKER led Piedmont with six hits in the two games and had the game-winning homerun in the fifth inning in Game 1. 

In the low scoring Game 1, Huntingdon took the early lead off a single up the middle to go ahead 1-0. 

The Lady Lions tied the game 1-1 in the fourth inning after a TK SAULS sacrifice bunt scored LINSAY LINK.

Facing two outs in the fifth inning, Coker homered to left field to give Piedmont a 2-1 lead. 

MELISSA ECKMAN picked up the win after pitching a complete game. 

Game 2 started off Huntingdon's way again as the Hawks, playing as the home team, took a 2-0 lead after the first inning. 

Piedmont would score one run in the third inning off a HANNAH HOBAN single to score Coker and then tied the game in the fourth after an ALLYSON GENTRY single scored HALEY MCCURRY

Huntingdon would then score one run in the fifth inning, before scoring five runs in the sixth. 


Turning Point
-- Tied 1-1 in the fifth inning of Game 1, JOSIE COKER drilled the ball to left field for a game winning homerun. 
-- Leading 3-2, the Hawks drove in five runs in the sixth inning in Game 2 to take the win. 

Standout Performances
-- JOSIE COKER finished the day with six hits and two runs. 

News & Notes
-- The Lions and Hawks split earlier in the season in Montgomery, Ala.
