DEMOREST, Ga. - The Piedmont College softball team took one of two against Maryville Tuesday handing the Scots their first conference loss of the season. The Lady Lions won 4-3 in game one while the Scots took game two in another one run game 3-2.
Game one saw the Lady Lions jump out early with two runs in the bottom of the first.
ALLYSON GENTRY singled and advanced to third on a pair of wild pitches, then scored thanks to
MARIANN KENNISON.
JOSIE COKER doubled then would later score on a
HANNAH HOBAN double as PC led 2-0.
It was quiet until the third inning when Piedmont would add one more as Coker would again double and send Kennison around from first. The final run from Piedmont came in the fifth inning with all three runs for the Scots coming in the final two innings of play.Â
Piedmont had nine hits in game one with five of them coming as doubles.
Game two saw Maryville score three unearned runs in the third inning to claim the lead and never surrendered it. The Lady Lions would add two in the fifth inning but could not push across a third to tie the contest.Â
Turning Point
--The winning run was scored on an error in a stolen base opportunity as
ALEXIS OWENS took off from first and forced a throw, then
MARIANN KENNISON threatened from third and an error was made on the next throw.
--Three unearned runs in the third inning were the difference in game two as the Scots pulled ahead and PC was unable to answer.
Standout Performances
--
MELISSA ECKMAN was stellar in the circle in game one as the Scots scored three runs, all coming in the final two innings, as she earned her 11th win of the season.
--
KORY BEST pitched well in relief in game two tossing 3.1 innings allowing three hits and no runs.
News & Notes
--The loss for the Scots was the first in USA South play this season.
