Raleigh, N.C. - The Piedmont College softball team split contests Saturday at the Grand Slam tournament in Raleigh, North Carolina losing a 4-0 game to Pfeiffer but winning a 5-4 contest over Methodist in eight innings.
The Falcons took control early in game one with a grand slam in the top of the first inning as that was the only scoring in the contest.
MELISSA ECKMAN was the starter for Piedmont, but
BECCA EDDINS pitching the final six innings of work giving up three hits but no runs.
In game two, the Piedmont offense got going early with two runs in the first inning, but the Monarchs took the lead 3-2 in the bottom of the third.
MARIANN KENNISON hit a home run in the fourth inning to tie the game and it would take extra innings to decide the contest, but Piedmont scored two in the eighth while only allowing one as Eckman struck out the final two batters to end the game.
Turning Point
--A grand slam in the first inning for the Falcons gave them the only four runs they would need to secure the win.
--Two runs scored in the eighth inning led Piedmont to victory as they held the Monarchs to a single run in the bottom of the frame.
Standout Performances
--
BECCA EDDINS pitched from the second inning on for the Lady Lions in game one as she did not allow another run to cross the plate.
--
MELISSA ECKMAN bounced back from taking the loss in game one to earn the win in game two.
Inside the Box Score
--The Lady Lions had just two hits against the Falcons.
--Piedmont was out-hit 9-5 by the Monarchs but managed to win with five runs on five hits and three errors.
News & Notes
--Both teams Piedmont faced are members of the USA South but these contests did not count toward the USA South schedule.
