The Lions are the #2 seed from the West Division taking on #3 Covenant. Live stats and video will be provided through the Office of Sports Information at Piedmont College.
SCOUTING COVENANT
The Scots enter with a 16-9 record overall and a 10-6 mark in league play this season. Covenant is averaging 85 points per game, but the Lions have held them under that mark in both contests this season giving up 82 and 69. Caleb Haynes averages 15.0 points per game while Berto Dryden is just off that mark with 14.8 points per game. The Scots are also a threat from deep as they have made 23 3-pointers against Piedmont this season shooting 23-of-69 as they like to shoot from downtown.
SERIES RECORDS
The Lions are 9-7 against the Scots all-time and Piedmont took both contests this season with the games coming almost exactly one month apart. These two met just three days ago with Piedmont winning 76-69 on Saturday over Covenant.
ROUND THREE
Since joining the USA South Conference in 2012, Piedmont has never entered a first round matchup having won the pair of contests against their opponent that season. This marks the fourth straight season Piedmont has made the conference tournament but the Lions have not won their opening contest in the tourney yet. This is also the first year that Piedmont has hosted a USA South tournament game.
LAST TIME OUT: V. COVENANT 76-79, W
On senior day for the Lions, the Piedmont men's basketball team defeated Covenant College 76-69 on a standout day for
JUSTIN VALLEJO. Vallejo had his 10th double-double of the season putting up 17 points and 14 rebounds.
Piedmont built a seven point lead with 9:05 to play until halftime, but the Scots kept it close and eventually took the lead on a 3-pointer 27-26. Piedmont responded and built a seven point lead again with
TAYLOR MILLS hitting a 3-pointer 47 seconds before the half to take a 43-36 lead into the break.
Neither team scored for almost two minutes over a period just into the second half, but Covenant kept chipping away and used a 10-0 run to claim the lead 55-50. The Lions battled and overcame adversity to score eight straight and regain the lead.
From that point on, the Lions never trailed with one of the biggest plays of the game coming with less than a minute to play as
LANDRY ASSINESI drew an offensive foul keeping the Scots from another scoring opportunity. Piedmont made 5-of-6 free throws inside the final minute to clinch the victory.
NEXT UP FOR THE TEAM
The winner of the quarterfinal contest will advance to the USA South Semifinals scheduled for February 24. The venue is decided based on the highest remaining seed.
