Demorest ,GA - The Piedmont College softball team began the 2018 campaign Friday with a pair of early contests playing host to Millsaps and Centre. The Lady Lions dropped both contests with a 4-2 loss to the Majors and an 11-3 loss to the Colonels.
In the season opener, the Majors put up a pair of runs in the top of the frame to take an early lead, but the Lady Lions responded with a pair of their own in the third inning to tie the contest. It would be short lived as the Majors would answer back in the top of the fourth to take a 4-2 lead.
The Lady Lions would record a hit in each inning from the 4th-7th but could not string together enough to pull off a comeback.
MELISSA ECKMAN took the loss pitching the entire contest with a pair of strikeouts.
Game two was all Centre as the Colonels would score in each inning, but Piedmont did take a short lead 3-1 in the second inning. The Lady Lions scored three runs on four hits including a 2-RBI double by freshman
TK SAULS.
The Colonels answered and tied the contest in the bottom of the inning, and would add at least a run each inning with five in the fourth inning and run-ruled Piedmont with a run in the fifth. Freshman
MADISON WHITESIDE made her first start of her career taking the loss pitching 3.2 innings.
Turning Point
--Three singles to lead off the fourth inning put the Majors in position to take the lead and they scored two runs on four hits and one error in that frame to claim the 4-2 advantage.
--Centre scored in every inning, but the final straw was a five run fourth inning that put them in striking distance for a run-rule victory.
