DEMOREST, Ga. - Despite leading by as many as 13 in the game, Piedmont's men's basketball team dropped a 75-72 game to Maryville Wednesday night thanks to a late run by the Scots. Maryville outscored Piedmont 16-7 over the final six minutes of the game to close out the contest and head home with the win.
Piedmont was electric out of the gate building a nine point lead with three straight 3-pointers leading 19-10 with 12:55 to go. The Lions would only tab six 3-pointers in the contest with three coming in the 1:30 stretch.
The lead was extended to as many as 13 making it 27-14 with 8:33 on the clock, but the Scots began to chip away at the deficit and used a 6-0 run to close out the half to cut it to 35-29 at halftime. Piedmont's lead dwindled to two in the opening minutes of the second half and Maryville tied the contest at 41 with 15:58 to go.
The Lions built back a seven point lead with 11:55 on the clock, but from that point on, neither team would hold a larger lead than that. It was with under 6:00 to play that the Scots began to take control using a 9-0 run to lead 68-65. Piedmont would tie the contest twice more, but was unable to complete the comeback.
Turning Point
--The Scots' Dante Hoppa made a 3-pointer with 1:40 to play, but Piedmont was unable to answer missing four shots from the floor over the final stretch.
Standout Performances
--
JUSTIN VALLEJO led the Lions with 17 points while
MARQUISE LANIER and
TAYLOR MILLS scored 13 each.
Inside the Box Score
--Dante Hoppa led all scorers with 21 points as he missed just one shot going 7-for-8.
