Lady Lions Fall at Birmingham-Southern 62-58

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team fell, 62-58, at Birmingham-Southern on Saturday evening.
 
For the second straight night, the Lions (6-3) jumped out to a double-digit lead after a quarter, only to see the Panthers (3-4) outscore them, 20-6, in the second quarter to immediately get back in the game. This time, however, there was no fourth quarter comeback for PC, as Birmingham-Southern escaped with the victory.
 
BRITTANY WALKER was a force in the paint for the Lions, leading the team with a career-high 17 points and seven rebounds. She was joined in double figures by RACHEL IRBY, who scored 12 points and added seven rebounds of her own. One game after recording her first career triple-double, AMARI PRICE tallied 11 points, four steals and three assists.
 
Piedmont led by as many as 15 points in the first quarter thanks to an early 10-0 run and took a 13-point lead into the second period.
 
In the second quarter, Birmingham-Southern used its own 10-0 run over the final 3:21 of the half to take its first lead since the game's opening minute.
 
The run by the Panthers extended into the third quarter, as they scored the first six points of the period to build a 39-32 lead before the Lions stormed back to tie the score at 40-all. Birmingham-Southern retook the lead, 48-47, on Cassady Quintana's three-pointer in the final seconds of the quarter.
 
In the final period, the Lions used a 6-0 run to take a 56-50 lead with four minutes remaining. However, from that point forward, the Panthers outscored them, 12-2, to emerge victorious.
 
Up next, Piedmont finally returns home after playing its first nine games away from Cave Arena. The team opens up its home slate on Wednesday, Dec. 5 at 6 p.m. against Wesleyan.
 
TURNING POINT:
- With the score knotted at 58 in the final minute, Birmingham-Southern's Aisya Davis knocked down a jumper to give the Panthers a lead they never relinquished.
 
STANDOUT PERFORMANCES:
- BRITTANY WALKER emerged with her best game of the campaign, leading the Lions with 17 points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes.
 
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE:
- The Lions were held to just 2-of-8 from beyond the arc for the game.
- The Panthers enjoyed a 39-33 rebounding edge.
