RALEIGH, N.C. - The Piedmont College volleyball team dropped a 3-0 game to host school Meredith in the 2018 USA South championship game. The Avenging Angels took the title with a 26-24, 25-17, 25-20 win over the Lady Lions.
Piedmont built an early lead in the opening set as they came out of the gate strong leading 16-11, but the Avenging Angels refocused and were able to cut the lead to 22-19. Piedmont had set point at 24-22, but Meredith reeled off four straight to take the opening set 26-24.
In the second set, Meredith used momentum from the comeback to lead 17-11 and cruised to the largest differential in the match with a 25-17 win. The third set was closer with a 25-20 margin as Piedmont once again led late 16-13, but Meredith was able to score six straight to force match point and take the championship.
Meredith notched 44 kills to Piedmont's 29 including holding the Lady Lions to just three in the final set.
Turning Point
--Meredith claimed a 26-24 win in the first set after rallying from trailing Piedmont 22-19 and used that momentum to carry through the championship.
Standout Performances
--JENNA WENDEL had 18 assists and 10 digs in the championship match as the only player in double figures in two categories.
News & Notes
--Piedmont ends the season at 16-11 after making their deepest run in the USA South tournament with their first championship game appearance since joining the league.
