Lady Lions Drop Home Contest to Mountaineers 72-65

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's basketball team took the court Saturday afternoon tipping off against the Berea College Mountaineers. The Mountaineers took control early with a 23-point first quarter to take the contest 72-65 over the Lady Lions.

The early success of the Mountaineers was shown three minutes into the first quarter when they hit back-to-back threes followed by a fast-break layup to go ahead 15-6 over PC. BRITTANY WALKER would end the run for Berea scoring four consecutive points of her own closing in on three minutes left in the opening quarter. The Mountaineers would go on a six-point run to close out the first leading 23-14 over the Lady Lions.

With 7:32 remaining in the half, CARLIE SHIELDS would put Piedmont within five points of Berea until a long three would extend the Mountaineer advantage once again. JATASIA BAILEY would knock down three three-pointers before the halftime buzzer but the offensive effort of Berea would keep PC down 37-32 at the break.

After back-and-forth action, RACHEL IRBY would score the old fashioned three point play to put PC down by only three points. The Mountaineers kept pressing and Piedmont would battle to within two with 4:15 to go in the third quarter. With the Lady Lions down four, Adriana Williams of Berea would score nine points in a row for the Mountaineers, at the end of the third, PC was down 57-47.

Piedmont would go on a seven-point run midway through the fourth quarter and hold Berea scoreless from 4:14 unitl late game free throws, but the Lady Lions were unable to close the gap.

Turning Point
--In the final 1:37 of the third quarter, Adriana Williams scored nine straight for Berea including five points in eight seconds. 

Standout Performances
--RACHEL IRBY set a new career-high in points with 17 against the Mountaineers. 

Inside the Box Score
--Berea collected more offensive rebounds in the first quarter than defensive at 11-9.

News & Notes
--This is the first meeting between the two teams as Berea is entering their first year as a USA South Conference team.

--The Lady Lions are back at home Sunday tipping off against Wesleyan at 1 p.m.
