Roanoke, VA -  The Piedmont College volleyball team split a pair of contests Friday at the Maroon Classic dropping a close match to Salem and picking up a sweep over the host team Roanoke. The Lady Lions continue with day two of action at the Maroon Classic Saturday with another pair of contests facing Bridgewater College and Mary Baldwin College. 

The match against Salem to open the tournament was a tough 3-2 loss that saw two sets go to extra points. Piedmont jumped out to a 2-0 lead with 27-25, 25-22 wins but Salem knotted it up winning 25-18, 26-24. The deciding fifth set went in favor of the Spirits 15-11 to hand PC its first loss of the 2017 season. 

The second match of the day saw PC take on the host Maroons sweeping Roanoke 3-0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-20). Kaitlyn Loesel led the team with 12 kills while ANNA WRIGHT added nine. The Lady Lions improved in each set with fewer errors each set against the Maroons with a .326 attack percentage as a team in the third set. 

Turning Point
--It was a close call with Salem that went the Spirits way as two of the five sets went to extra points with the Spirits claiming the fourth set 26-24 and the final set 15-11. 

Standout Performances
--KATELYN DURMIRE accounted for 17 kills against Salem while CECE COGLIANO was just one behind her with 16 kills as they combined for 33 of Piedmont's 66 kills in the match. 

News & Notes
--HALEY HIXON totaled 48 digs in the two matches with 30 against Salem in the first match of the day.

--Piedmont continues action at the Roanoke Maroon Classic with a pair of matches on Saturday against Bridgewater and Mary Baldwin.
