Piedmont Pitching Leads Baseball to 3-2 Victory over N.C. Wesleyan

Demorest, GA - Thanks to stellar work on the mound from freshman SAM CARPENTER and junior BUDDY GREEN, the Piedmont College baseball team won 3-2 over N.C. Wesleyan College Saturday. The win clinches the series victory with the series finale coming Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. on Senior Day.

The Lions trailed early after an unearned run in the top of the first as an error allowed a runner to reach on what would've been the third out of the inning. Piedmont looked to answer back in the bottom of the second after two singles and a walk loaded the bases, but PC left the bases loaded with Lions leaving it 1-0 NCWC.

Piedmont did score in the bottom of the third as there were three straight singles with ZACH LANGLEY hitting an RBI single scoring GRIFFIN OLSON to even the score. In the bottom of the fifth, the Lions took the lead 2-1 on a sac fly to center field by GRIFFIN OLSON that scored GRIFFIN CARACCIOLO. 

SAM CARPENTER had a pair of three-up, three-down innings to end his afternoon in the sixth and seventh innings as he pitched seven innings giving up five hits and just one earned run. 

The Lions added a third run in the sixth inning in what proved to be the game-winning run as CALEB NORTON singled to score NOAH HEATHERLY. The Battling Bishops plated a run in the eighth inning making it 3-2, but the Lions held on for the victory. 

Turning Point
--Piedmont's game-winning run came in the sixth inning when CALEB NORTON singled to score NOAH HEATHERLY and give PC a 3-1 lead. 

Standout Performances
--SAM CARPENTER pitched seven innings giving up just one earned run and five hits while striking out four batters. 
--BUDDY GREEN also was stellar on the mound picking up his fourth save pitching the final two innings allowing just a single hit. 

Inside the Box Score
--Piedmont out-hit N.C. Wesleyan 10-6 in the contest. 

News & Notes
--The win gives Piedmont its first conference series win of the season moving to 5-9 in USA South play.

--The Lions continue action against N.C. Wesleyan College on Sunday with senior day on April 2.
