Lady Lion Softball Swept in Doubleheader by Ferrum Panthers

Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College softball team lost a pair of contests Friday afternoon to Ferrum College on the road in Virginia. The Panthers won 3-0 in game one and came back to win 2-1 in game two to complete the sweep. 

The Lady Lions had four hits in the first game but were unable to string them together with each hit coming in a separate inning. The Panthers took the lead 1-0 in the second inning and tacked on two more in the sixth inning to seal the 3-0 win. 

SARAH WALKER took the loss giving up just seven hits and striking out four batters on the day. The Panthers would again have an early run and a sixth inning addition in game two to win 2-1 giving MELISSA ECKMAN her fifth loss of the season.

The Lady Lions did put a run across in the third inning of game two as HALEY MCCURRY was hit by a pitch, ALLYSON GENTRY doubled to right center and HALEY HIXON drove in McCurry on an RBI groundout. 

The losses move Piedmont to 11-5 in league play with a DH against the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin University on the horizon Saturday. 

Turning Point
--A pair of hits in the bottom of the second provided the first run of the contest and the only run Ferrum would need in a 3-0 win in game one. 
--In the bottom of the sixth, a lead-off double by the Panthers would later score to provide the game-winner in a tight 2-1 contest. 

Standout Performances
--HALEY MCCURRY was 2-for-2 in game one as the only Lady Lion with two hits in either game. 
--Ferrum's Rudd had nine strikeouts in game two against the Lady Lions. 

Inside the Box Score
--The shutout in game one is just Piedmont's third time all season being held without a run in 30 games. 

News & Notes
--Piedmont was out-hit in both contests with four hits in the first game and three in the second. 

Up Next
--The Lady Lions head to Mary Baldwin University on Saturday for a pair of contests scheduled to start at 1 and 3 p.m.
