Volleyball Drops USA South Quarterfinal Match to Maryville 3-2

MARYVILLE, Tn. -
 
 In the first round of the USA South tournament, Piedmont won 3-0 against Agnes Scott to face the home-standing Maryville Scots, but in the quarterfinals, it was the Scots who would prevail in five 3-2. The Lady Lions end the 2017 season with a 16-11 record overall.

Piedmont took the opening match against Agnes Scott in straight sets with a 25-13, 25-22, 25-15 victory. The Lady Lions posted seven blocks in the contest while holding the Scotties without one in the match. KATELYN DURMIRE and Kaitlyn Loesel led the way for PC with seven kills each while HALEY HIXON posted 19 digs.

Just under two hours later, Piedmont returned to the court to take on the second seeded Maryville Scots for the third time in 2017. The Lady Lions took the first set 25-18 but dropped the second 25-19. In the third set, PC made quick work with a 25-15 win, and in the fourth, it was knotted at 15 before the Scots pulled away with a 7-0 streak midway through.

That proved to be the difference in the set as Maryville went on to win it 25-23 despite a valiant effort by the Lady Lions to storm a comeback. In the fifth set, it was all Scots as they won 15-5 to seal the match and a trip to the semifinals in the USA South tournament. 


Turning Point
--The difference in the match with Maryville came in the fourth set when Maryville scored seven straight points to take a 22-15 lead, which Piedmont could not overcome. 

Standout Performances
--KAITLYN LOESEL led Piedmont in the match against Maryville as she tallied 15 kills with a .333 attack percentage. 

News & Notes
--Maryville won each of the three matchups against Piedmont in the 2017 season.
