Women’s Soccer Falls In USA South Quarterfinals To Covenant In PK Shootout

DEMOREST, Ga. – The Piedmont College women's soccer team suffered its first loss of the season on Saturday, falling to No. 3 seeded Covenant College 4-3 in penalty kicks in the USA South Quarterfinals. Both teams battled to a 1-1 draw after 110 minutes of play as the game came down to the final pk.

Piedmont entered Saturday's conference quarterfinal match as the No. 2 seed in the West Division and had home field advantage against the Scots. The Lady Lions dominated the stat sheet with a 21-6 shot advantage and had seven corner kicks to Covenant's zero.

The Scots broke the scoreless tie in the 25th minute and held the lead throughout the first half. The Lady Lions had serval opportunities to score early but were unable to find the back of the net.
Just under 25 minutes into the second half, senior ALEXIS GOTTKO pulled Piedmont even with an assist from freshman MADISON HATFIELD. Gottko's goal marked the first of her career.

The two teams continued to battle and took the 1-1 score into two overtimes. After 20 minutes of extra time, the game would be decided on penalty kicks.

Covenant would go onto score four of five attempts while Piedmont missed its first and fifth attempt. The Scots advance to the USA South Semifinals after winning 4-3 in the shootout.

-- Reich and CASSIE KIRK each had a game-high 2 shots on goal.

News & Notes
-- Although the Lady Lions lost in the shootout, both teams are credited with a tie.
-- Piedmont last lost its opening USA South tournament game in 2014 to N.C. Wesleyan. That game was also decided in penalty kicks
