Castles’ Late Game Heroics Leads Piedmont Past Emory 1-0

DEMOREST, Ga. – Senior SAVANNAH CASTLES scored in the 89th minute with an assist from ANSLYN STAMPS to give the Piedmont women's soccer team an 1-0 win over in-state opponent Emory University.

Both teams entered Thursday's game ranked in the South Atlantic Region according to the United Soccer Coaches while Emory is ranked eighth in the region by the NCAA.

Tied 0-0 with just under two minutes remaining, Stamps won an Emory clear was able to find Castles who outran one defender and beat another to place the ball just outside the reach of the Eagles' goalkeeper.

Piedmont went on the defensive after the goal and cleared the ball to let the clock wind down to zero and take the win.

The goal was Castles' fifth of the season while Stamps recorded her first assist of the season.

The Eagles controlled most of the first half and outshot the Lady Lions 6-0 with two shots on goal.

Emory came out for the second half and was able to add six more shots to the stat sheet but the Eagles were only able to place one shot on goal.

Keeper MIRANDA MCNALLEY played a brilliant game in the shutout and recorded three saves and broke up many Emory crosses. The shutout was McNalley's ninth of the season.
