Score: Piedmont 1 - Berry 4
Records: Lady Lions 4-4-1 (3-1-1 USA South), Vikings 5-4 (0-1 SAA)
Location: Demorest, Georgia - Walker Athletic Complex
Demorest, GA - A late surge by the Vikings of Berry College was too much for the Piedmont College women's soccer team on Wednesday evening as the visitors to Walker Athletic Complex scored three goals in the final 17 minutes to earn a 4-1 win over PC.
Berry took the lead on a finish in the box after clever build-up allowed midfielder Maggie Midkiff the chance to slot one past Piedmont keeper ASHLYN ATNIP in the 26th minute. The Vikings were on the ball for much of the first half led by Midkiff who was a 2015 All-American selection for the visitors.
In the second half, it was a different story to open up for Piedmont as the Lady Lions began to get their legs earning more of the possession through the first 20 minutes of the period. Finally, Piedmont got the equalizer it was looking for as CASSIDY REICH smashed an attempted clearance into the Berry net with her left foot to make it a 1-1 game in the 68th.
Despite taking advantage of the momentum, Piedmont allowed it to swing back to the Vikings when Midkiff pounced on a deflected ball and promptly fired to the far post to put Berry back up 2-1. Chasing the game for a second time on the evening, PC would allowed two goals over the final ten minutes to go down 4-1 to the in-state foe.
Turning Point
--A goal by Maggie Midkiff, her second of the evening, just over five minutes after
CASSIDY REICH tied it for Piedmont took the air out of the complex and handed momentum back to the Vikings of Berry.
Standout Performances
--Maggie Midkiff of Berry scored on each shot she took on the night finishing with a pair of goals to lead the Vikings to the win.
--For Piedmont,
CASSIDY REICH looked just as dangerous with a score that leveled the board in the 68th minute and a strike off the bar at 3-1 that could have made the final five minutes a different contest.
Inside the Box Score
--The shot count favored Berry, but not as much as the score as the Vikings outshot the home team 13-8 but Berry put nine of those on target testing Piedmont keeper
ASHLYN ATNIP.
--Reich with her score tonight now sits with
SAMANTHA ISHEE atop the points column for Piedmont with eight to her name, three goals and two assists.
News & Notes
--Berry now owns a 3-2 advantage in the series after Piedmont evened it up with a win last year in overtime in Rome, Georgia.
