Rocky Mount, NCÂ - In the USA South Championship Game earlier Saturday afternoon, it was the Avenging Angels of Meredith College coming out on top 17-11 over the Piedmont College women's lacrosse team.
It was the third meeting between these two programs in the USA South Championship Game with Meredith having now taken all three of those match-ups. Â Piedmont was led in scoring by
MAGGIE MCDANIEL who posted five goals and an assist on the afternoon.Â
McDaniel had a hat-trick in the first 18 minutes of the contest as her third of the day gave Piedmont its largest lead of the afternoon at 6-2 with PC tallying four straight to build the advantage. Â However, Meredith responded with three straight of its own to get back in the mix cutting the lead down to one.
Piedmont held a tight 8-7 lead at the break as Meredith scored twice in the final 1:13 of the first half to stay within striking distance as the Lady Lions could not pull away from the two-time defending champs.
Coming out from halftime,
CAHNER MANNS scored just 28 seconds in to give Piedmont a two-goal lead, but Meredith responded with three straight goals in just 101 seconds to overtake the Lady Lions for the first time on the day, 10-9. Â
Meredith led by three when Manns scored again at the 15:42 mark, but the Avenging Angels locked down defensively adding more insurance to the lead closing in on the conference crown. Â Meredith went on to score five of the final six goals on the afternoon to earn the 17-11 win and a tournament championship.
Turning Point
--The Avenging Angels trailed 9-7 after an early 2nd half goal by
CAHNER MANNS, but Meredith locked in from that point on to score 11 of the next 12 goals in the contest to take control.
Standout Performances
--
MAGGIE MCDANIEL scored five goals to lead Piedmont in that category in her final game for the Lady Lions.
--The 2016 USA South Player of the Year Carlee Joseph looked the part scoring eight times for Meredith in the win.
Inside the Box Score
--The draw was split down the middle with each team winning 15 on the day.
--The Avenging Angels held the edge in ground balls with 26 to Piedmont's 18.
News & Notes
--This was the third straight meeting between these two in the USA South title game.Â
--Meredith claims the USA South Tournament title in the same season as a Regular Season championship for the first time in program history.
