CHRIS MEEKS turned in a double-double on senior day and the Lions looked to be mounting a memorable comeback late against LaGrange College on Saturday afternoon, but it was not to be for PC who fell 96-90 in USA South men's basketball action.
Piedmont's
CHASE ENGLAND let go of a three-point try that would have tied with with just about 20 seconds left in regulation, but his shot rattled too many times on the rim and popped out with LC grabbing the board and holding on for the six point win in Cave Arena on Senior Day. Â
Piedmont honored its lone senior in
CHRIS MEEKS just before he pulled down 11 rebounds and scored 11 points for his sixth double-double of the season. Â It was also the 20th time in Piedmont's 25 games this season that Meeks has collected seven or more rebounds.
The Lions trailed by two at the half but shot the ball well on the day hitting on better than 51% marking the first time that Piedmont has lost a game this season in which the Lions shot better than 50%. Â PC previously owned a 5-0 record in such contests.Â
Though the loss ends the regular season, Piedmont has already secured its first winning season since 2009-10 and will be headed back to the USA South postseason for a second straight season securing the #6 seed in the field setting a rematch of last weekend's 2-OT instant classic at Greensboro which saw the Lions come out on top.Â
Turning Point--Piedmont could feel momentum shifting after an offensive foul in a one-possession game gave the Lions a chance with 22 seconds left, but it was not to be as a three-pointer rattled halfway down before popping out with LC holding on by a thread in the end against the Lions.
Standout Performances--Four Lions were in double figures including Peyton "Cool Hand"Â Luken who tallied a team-high 23 points connecting on six of ten three-point tries, a new season best as he had previously hit four three-pointers on seven occassions this season.--
CHASE ENGLAND posted 16 points on 5-of-9 shooting while also collecting a half dozen rebounds as well.
Inside the Box Score--
Saturday's match-up was one of the highest scoring games for Piedmont this season as the 186 combined points is second only to the last meeting between these two which featured 189 points in a 105-84 loss for PC to the Panthers back on January 20.--
JUSTIN VALLEJO was efficient hitting 5-of-6 from the floor, the fourth time this season that the sophomore has missed one shot or less when taking more than four shots from the field.
News & Notes--These two could meet again if both teams made it to the Championship Game of next week's USA South Championship Tournament as LaGrange sits on the other side of the bracket.Up NextPiedmont makes the USA South postseason for the second straight season under Head Coach Greg Neeley with the Lions taking the #6 seed in the upcoming tourney to be hosted by North Carolina Wesleyan who posted a 12-2 record in league play. Â Piedmont will have a rematch with Greensboro on Thursday, February 25 in Rocky Mount as the two just recently battled to a double overtime decision that fell in favor of Piedmont. Â Tip off in Carolina is set for a 1:00 pm start as the Lions will kick off the tourney at NC Wesleyan.
