The Marlins outhit the Lions 13-6 as the loss snapped a five-game win streak for Piedmont.
The scoring started early as Virginia Wesleyan put up three runs in the top of the first but starter
BEN MCCURLEY settled in and the Marlins did not score again until the fifth inning. Piedmont got on the board in the third inning after a
BRADY BALLSTADT sacrifice fly scored
CALEB NORTON making it 3-1.Â
The Lions added another pair of runs in the fourth inning as
JAKE BROWNING was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded sending home
BRECK DAVIDSON then a wild pitch scored
ZACK JOHNSON making it a tie game at 3 all.
In the following half inning though the Marlins regained the lead for good after a run scored on a single but
CHRIS WHITE threw out the second runner coming home on the play with the throw in from left field to Browning. The Marlins scored a pair in the fifth and added another in the sixth taking a 6-3 lead.
Piedmont continued to claw back with a run in the bottom of the seventh as it looked like the comeback kids could be at it again as
EVAN GRESHAM doubled to scored
WILL SKIDMORE who doubled to lead off the inning. The Lions were unable to have any success in the 8th or 9th inning though sending just three batters to the plate in each inning.Â
Turning Point--A pair of runs in the fifth inning for the Marlins broke a 3-3 tie and put Virginia Wesleyan up for good.Â
Standout Performances--
BRECK DAVIDSON was the only Lion to record more than a single hit as he went 2-for-4 with a run scored.Â
Inside the Box Score--The loss snapped a five game win streak the Lions began following an opening day loss.Â
News & Notes--Piedmont has now recorded six triples this season with three coming in the Piedmont College Early Spring Classic. Up NextThe Piedmont College Early Spring Classic wraps up on Sunday with the Lions taking on Millsaps at 4 p.m. The Majors entered the Early Spring Classic 2-4 and have split their first two contests with a loss to open against Virginia Wesleyan and a win on Saturday over York.Â
