Second Half Surge Gives Lady Lions Win in Conference Opener Against Salem 82-62

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team opened up conference play early Saturday afternoon against the Spirits of Salem College taking the contest 82-62 over the Spirits.

PC was on an early roll going on an eight point run in the opening minutes of the contest keeping the Spirits scoreless for the first three minutes. 

Salem would answer the challenge with a ten point run of their own to take the lead with under five left in the quarter.  The Lady Lions and the Spirits exchanged jumpers until the buzzer ending the quarter 22-19 in favor or the Lady Lions.

The Spirits had the opportunity to tie it up to start the second but a missed jumper found the hands of CARLIE SHIELDS and the Lady Lions were quickly heading the other way with AMARI PRICE finding CARLY SALES for the layup to start the quarter.

Salem kept battling back with the hot hands of Sabrina Shepherd scoring 17 points in the first half alone. 

The halftime buzzer would come with the Lady Lions leading 39-36 with both teams scoring 17 points in the second quarter.

Coming out of the locker room the Spirits were first on the board in under a minute closing the gap to one point but DAKOTA SULLENS charged down the court for a layup exactly ten seconds later.

A ten point run book-ended by CARLIE SHIELDS lay ups in the third would extend the PC lead to 51-40 with five minutes left in the quarter. 

BRIANNA BARRETT grabbed a defensive rebound with eleven seconds on the clock and JAZMINE LAWRENCE put in the lay up moments before the horn with Piedmont on top 65-49.

The Lady Lions outscored the Spirits 17-13 in the fourth but with the large deficit created in the third, Piedmont would take the contest 82-62.

Turning Point
-- Piedmont doubled the Spirits in the third quarter putting in 26 points to their 13 during the ten minute period including a mid-quarter ten-point run. 

Standout Performances

-- JAZMINE LAWRENCE had 14 points on the contest going 7-of-10 from the field.
-- CARLY SALES dominated the paint grabbing 11 rebounds in the game, seven of which kept the Lady Lions on the offensive end. 

Inside the Box Score
-- The difference came from the Piedmont bench scoring 41 points compared to the 9 from the Salem bench.
-- The Lady Lions collected ten steals in the game aiding in their 22 points off of turnovers.

News & Notes
-- This game marks the first contest in conference for the Lady Lions and also the first USA South conference women's basketball game ever for the Spirits.  

Up Next
-- The Lady Lions will make the trip to Birmingham to play the Panthers of Birmingham Southern on December 9th. The Lady Lions met with the Panthers in Cave Arena for the PC home opener, the Lady Lions won the contest 52-39.
