Averett Forces OT to Overtake Women's Basketball 91-85 in Danville

Need to Know
Score: Piedmont 85, Averett 91
Records: Lions 6-4, Cougars 6-4
Location: Danville, Virginia - E. Stuart James Grant Center

Danville, VA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team could not get out of Danville a perfect 2-0 on the week falling to East-West Classic Tourney host Averett University in overtime earlier Monday afternoon by a 91-85 scoreline.

Piedmont's CARLY SALES stepped up to knock down two clutch free throws with just over 12 seconds left in regulation to break a 70-70 tie and give the visitors a 2-point edge.  However, Averett's Samm Chandler was able to draw a foul the next possession with only two seconds left and knock down both tries at the line to tie it back up and force overtime.

The extra period belonged to Averett who hit a three to jump out to a lead, one which the Cougars never relinquished in bonus basketball at the Grant Center.

Holding a nine-point lead at halftime after 12 first half points from Amari Price, the Piedmont College women's basketball team saw the Cougars surge in the 4th quarter to push the issue with Averett outscoring Piedmont 22-14 in the final period.

Turning Point
--Averett's strong 4th quarter that swung the momentum with the Cougars closing an eight point deficit heading into the period before six minutes ticked off the clock.

Standout Performances

--AMARI PRICE was among four Lady Lions who shot the ball well in Virginia as she went 6-for-10 from the field scoring 15 points while pulling down six boards.
--CARLY SALES was the points leader once again with 22 getting to the line for 13 free throws and knocking down 12 including her clutch two tries late in regulation to put PC up two.
--Youngster JALEN DAVIS scored five of her ten points in the first quarter alone shooting 75% from the field on the day.

Inside the Box Score
--Flipping the script from yesterday's win over Ferrum where PC made more 3's than the Panthers attempted, Averett was strong from distance outshooting PC 33% to 14% from downtown on the day.
--Four Lady Lions shot 50% or better on the day including BRIDGETTE KELLY who was the only Piedmont player to knock down a three making both her tries from deep.

News & Notes
--Coming into the afternoon, Piedmont had won five straight in this series with the Cougars as the only Averett win came back in 2009, the pair's first meeting in PC's NCAA Era.

Up Next
--Piedmont's Cancer Awareness Tournament hosted in Cave Arena on December 29 and 30 with Meredith College, Emory University, and Huntingdon College all coming to Demorest for the two-day event.
