Location: Demorest, Georgia - Cave Arena
Demorest, GA - Playing in the second of four straight games over a four-day period, the Piedmont College volleyball team dug deep to hold off a late Maryville College rally in Cave Arena Sunday afternoon taking a 3-1 victory over the Scots in conference play.
The day was not without drama though the first two sets were rather quiet compared to the rest of the afternoon as Piedmont took the opener 25-20 before rolling in the second to win 25-15. Â
Despite the 2-set lead, the day was not done as the two-time USA South champ Scots would not go quietly into the afternoon rallying from a 17-11 Piedmont lead to score six straight and tie it at 17 apiece in the third. From that point on in the set there would be eight ties before Maryville broke a 25-25 tie with back-to-back kills from Julia Vineyard to take the third 27-25.
Locked in another late tie in the fourth, Maryville won the next rally to go up 25-24 but Piedmont again fought off set point winning two straight to come within a point of ending it. Â
After the Scots won to tie it at 26, Piedmont took back-to-back points to end it as liberoÂ
HALEY HIXON watched a Brianne Sidner attack sail long for a 28-26 win in the fourth and a 3-1 match win.
Turning Point
--Down 17-13 in the 4th looking like it was headed to five, Piedmont dug deep to win five straight and take a one-point lead on the way to winning in four holding off the rally from Maryville.
Standout Performances
--Take your pick from the hitting trio of
KATELYN DURMIRE,
AMANDA TROTTER, and
KAITLYN LOESEL as Durmire led with 13 kills while Trotter and Loesel each had a dozen themselves.
--Freshman setter
LAINEY CHOINIERE had a day to remember as well with 48 assists in the match, a new 4-set single match record for the Piedmont volleyball program.Â
Inside the Box Score
--Freshman
CECE COGLIANO almost gave Piedmont four hitters with double-digit kills finishing with nine on the day as that would been the first time this season PC would have had four with at least ten each.
--Prior to Sunday afternoon, Piedmont had only one match this season with two or more hitters finishing with double-digit kills with that coming in the second match of the year, a five-set win over Oglethorpe.
News & Notes
--Piedmont came into the day with just one win in its last nine match-ups with Maryville though it came in the last time these two shared the court, October 28, 2015.
--A day after Piedmont tallied 13 service errors, the Lady Lions flipped the script with 14 service aces on the day.
