Demorest, GA - In a conference contest at home, the Piedmont College women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout of West Division leader Covenant College earlier Friday evening courtesy of a second half goal from sophomore CASSIDY REICH.
Reich scored in the 77th minute on a back heel, no-look flick off a TORI GILLETT corner kick service after the goalscorer ran near post to net the goal which stood as the gamewinner.
Covenant came into the day leading the West Division before falling to PC while Salem's win over Maryville has put the Spirits now in front with 34 points to Covenant's 33. The two programs match up tomorrow against each other while Piedmont hosts Maryville as the top four in the Division battle on the final weekend of league play.
Piedmont kept the net clean for the fifth time in its last seven games to hold on for the home victory as the Lady Lions also earn their 10th win in conference play marking the third straight season PC has collected 10 USA South wins. A win tomorrow would hand the program its first 11-win season in league play since joining the USA South prior to the 2012 season.
Turning Point
--No doubt it was the late score by Reich on the corner from Gillett as the two linked up on a goal that gave Piedmont a 1-0 shutout of the Division leader.
Standout Performances
--
CASSIDY REICH piled on four shots including the gamewinner late in the second half, her second game-winning goal of the month as she tallied the lone goal in a win over Huntingdon on Oct. 1.
--
CIERRA BELINKIE collected her third straight shutout with 90 minutes in the net as the freshman now has four clean sheets on the year.
Inside the Box Score
--It was a rather low-shooting affair on Friday as the two teams combined for only nine shots but the count favored Piedmont 7-2.
--Piedmont pressed the issue with three corners in the second half alone scoring on the last one taken with just under 14 minutes remaining.
News & Notes
--The loss for Covenant snapped a seven-game winning streak the Scots carried into Friday afternoon as they can still clinch the regular season title tomorrow with a win at Salem who is currently riding a ten-game winning streak.
