Demorest, GA - Playing in conference the second time in two days, the Piedmont College women's soccer team used a pair of headers on corner kicks to get a 2-0 win over LaGrange College early Sunday afternoon.
Piedmont controlled the run of play throughout only giving up one shot to the opposition which went wide of the post. Meanwhile, the Lady Lions applied pressure on the LaGrange back line that allowed 14 corners to be earned by the home team.
On one of nine corners in the first half, a
HALEY HALL driven ball found the head of
MORGAN EDELMAN who promptly fired it past LaGrange keeper Jesse Grogan for a 1-0 lead in the 11th minute of play.
With more pressure mounting, another corner kick, this time served in by
TORI GILLETT, found a charging
SAVANNAH CASTLES who headed it in off the crossbar as Piedmont capitalized on another set piece opportunity.
The goal in the 39th minute by Castles would be the final one of the afternoon as Piedmont picked up another shutout victory in conference play.
Turning Point
--Leading already 1-0 in the first half, Piedmont's second header on a corner kick broke the LaGrange defense with too large a deficit for the Panthers to make up.
Standout Performances
--
MORGAN EDELMAN and
SAVANNAH CASTLES were threats to be feared on each set piece as each had a header on a corner that found the back of the net.
--
CIERRA BELINKIE picked up her first career shutout playing the full 90 in the net for PC.
Inside the Box Score
--The Panthers were shut down offensively once more as the visitors had only one shot in the game and have now only scored one goal through seven games in conference play.
--The one shot allowed today for PC was the fourth straight game in conference play that Piedmont has allowed exactly one shot (Wesleyan, Agnes Scott, Huntingdon).
