Greensboro, NC - The Piedmont College volleyball team swept Methodist University in three before falling in a five-set thriller to host Greensboro College earlier Saturday in USA South action on the road.
Against Methodist, Piedmont held off the Monarchs in the first 26-24 before taking wins 25-20 and 25-18 in the second and third sets respectively. PC was impressive at the net defensively with eight blocks to just three for the Monarchs while PC also racked up 14 service aces in the match led by
LAINEY CHOINIERE's five.
After knocking off the Monarchs of Methodist University, the Lady Lions came out against Greensboro taking the opening set tight 25-22 before the Pride rolled to a 25-10 winner in the second set. Piedmont would reclaim the lead in the third winning 25-20 and had a lead midway through the fourth.
However, Greensboro rallied mid-way through taking a 21-17 lead looking to push it to five. Piedmont would respond forcing a 23-23 trying to take it in four, but two straight for the home team gave the fourth instead to Greensboro and set up a winner-take-all fifth.
This time, it was the Pride who tried to put an end to it early winning seven straight points to take a commanding 11-5 lead. Piedmont rallied though winning six straight itself to tie it up at 11 on four kills, a Greensboro hitting error, and a
HALEY HIXON service ace.
Despite the rally, Greensboro appeared back in control taking a 14-11 lead one point away from sealing the match, but back-to-back kills from
AMANDA TROTTER forced a home team timeout that could not keep the Lady Lions from tying it at 14 with another Trotter smash.
However, Greensboro picked up back-to-back kills from Emily Horn to earn a 16-14 win in the fifth taking the match three sets to two.
