Greensboro Holds Off Lions in Nail-biter at Walker on First-Ever Senior Night

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College men's lacrosse team came up just shy of a win on the program's first-ever senior night as visiting Greensboro College held off the Lions 15-14 at Walker Athletic Complex.

Seven different Lions scored for Piedmont in the one-goal loss with five of the seven being seniors as the veterans were honored prior to the first face-off with Head Coach Pete Manderano graduating his first four-year class after the program started back in 2012.

Veterans NICK GREEN and SPENCER ORTIS led the way with each scoring three goals on the evening as both climb ever closer to the century mark as two of the program's most prolific scorers.  Green now sits at 94 while Ortis is two away from 100 in his career.

TAYLOR CARTER, STEVE BLANCHARD, and PATRICK AMMONS each added a pair of goals to the efforts as Ammons put forward one of the highlights of the night with a spectacular score in the third quarter that was added to the Piedmont YouTube Channel as a SportsCenter Top Ten nominee.  Ammons scored an unassisted goal flipping a shot that slipped past Greensboro's Cody Cunningham as Ammons was defending by multiple members of the Pride defense as his shot came as the senior was backing up toward the goal.

In the midnight edition of SportsCenter, the Ammons no-look score was the #9 play in the SC Top Ten countdown marking the 2nd straight year that Piedmont's Mane Event Broadcasting Network has seen a play originally aired live on the newly founded video broadcasting network make the Top Ten grade.  A year ago, it was a triple play from a Piedmont baseball game that earned a spot in the SC Top Ten, but this year it's the goal of the year from Ammons that snags a spot in the countdown.

Ammons' goal in the third was one of two for the Lions but the Pride tallied four in the quarter to rally back from a 9-8 deficit at the half taking a 12-11 lead into the final 15 minutes of play.

Greensboro led after the first quarter 5-4 as Piedmont scored two in the final five minutes of the period to trim the Pride's three goal lead down to just one heading into the 2nd.  Piedmont had scored first on the night with TAYLOR CARTER finding the net less than four minutes in and again led 2-1 minutes later before the Pride went on a four-goal streak to take their first lead of the evening.

The second quarter belonged to the home team as Piedmont tallied five goals in the period with SPENCER ORTIS tallying two of his three on the night in that 2nd quarter run for PC.  Holding an 8-7 lead, Piedmont saw the Pride tie things up at eight as Greensboro's Drew Farrel scored with under 50 seconds to go before the halftime break.

However, senior NICK GREEN responded with a goal as 22 seconds remained before the intermission to give Piedmont the one-goal lead heading into the locker room.  Coming out of the halftime, Greensboro scored the first three goals to reclaim the lead in a back-and-forth 3rd quarter that set the table in front of a packed house at the Walker Athletic Complex for a dramatic 4th quarter.

Down 13-11 after a Blaine Wise score to open the 4th, the Lions scored two goals separated by just 17 seconds to tie the score at 13 all with STEVE BLANCHARD and PATRICK AMMONS accounting for the scores that drew the two teams level for the 8th time on the evening.

Now tied at 13-13, Greensboro would score a pair of late goals to surge ahead but Piedmont answered with a goal at the 1:52 mark of the 4th to make it a one-goal game as still plenty of time remained for the Lions to even it up.

However, the Pride defense stood up to the test holding Piedmont scoreless down the stretch as the final shot of the contest for PC was saved dramatically by Cummingham preserving the 15-14 win for Greensboro at Walker.  MICK BAKER picked up the tough-luck loss in the cage despite coming up with 17 saves while Cunningham took the win for the Pride.

The Lions will be back in action this coming Wednesday, April 8 as Piedmont hosts its final home game of the regular season with Young Harris College coming to Demorest for a showdown under the lights at Walker.  The first face-off will be at 7:00 pm.

Live coverage of the final regular season contest at home for the Lions will be carried on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network with video and stats being provided.
