Box Score Wilson, N.C. – The Piedmont College baseball team began their three-game series with Greensboro College this afternoon at Fleming Stadium in Wilson, NC. Three big innings provided the Lions with the win 9-8.
GRIFFIN OLSON lifted the Lions over the Pride with a clutch triple in the top of the ninth to tie the game at 8 allowing senior
TYLER MARCINKO to pick up the game-winning run.
The Lions got off to a hot start in the top of the first inning with
BRECK DAVIDSON picking up a two RBI single that scored Olson and
WILL SKIDMORE. Davidson currently leads the team in RBI with 34 in the 2015 season.
DANIEL LINDSEY picked up the third RBI of the inning on a groundout to put the Lions up 3-0. However, the Pride found their stride offensively as well.
The two high-powered offenses combined for 27 total hits with 17 runs. Greensboro did not stay behind long picking up one run in the first and two more runs in the second.
Responding to the 3-3 tie, the men in green and gold exploded for another three-run inning in the top of the fourth.
KEITH GRABOWSKI picked up his eighth double of the season that scored senior
CASEY PARHAM.
Olson scored a long double for the second run of the inning, while an
EVAN GRESHAM popup would allow Skidmore to steal home giving the Lions a 6-3 advantage headed to the bottom of the fourth.
The Pride followed with two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to give them a two-run lead, 8-6 headed into the sixth.
Both teams would stay relatively quiet until the Lions spurred a rally in the top of the ninth. The sophomore shortstop Olson blasted his first triple of the 2015 season to tie the game at 8-8.
Marcinko would aid Olson in a ninety-foot journey to give the eventual final score of 9-8 with the Lions three innings that saw three runs scored.
Senior
CHRIS GOERSHEL made the start on the mound for the Lions throwing 4.2 innings on 11 hits with eight runs, six of which were earned, and three strikeouts.
The bullpen continued its domination throwing the final 4.1 innings which saw
LUKE MACDONALD throw 1.2 innings on only three hits and no runs with a strikeout.
Senior
MATT STEPHENS picked up his first victory of the year Friday throwing 1.2 innings and giving up only one hit on no runs and one strikeout with
JOSH THOMAS slamming the door in the ninth. Thomas picked up his fifth save of the 2015 season marking the ninth save of his career as a Lion.
Offensively, Skidmore, who finished the day 3-for-4 with three runs scored, led the Lions. Not far behind the junior were
GRIFFIN OLSON (2-for-4 with two runs and three RBI),
TYLER MARCINKO (2-for-5 with an RBI), and
KEITH GRABOWSKI (2-for-3 with two runs scored and an RBI as well).
The Lions improve to 20-14 overall and 16-12 in USA South Athletic Conference play while the Pride fall to 11-24 overall with a 10-18 conference record.
The two teams will square off in a twin bill Saturday with the first game starting at 10 A.M. in Zebulon, N.C. at the Five County Stadium. Both games will be covered via live stats courtesy of Greensboro College.
