Montgomery, AL - The Piedmont College men's lacrosse team could not overcome the early spark of the Hawks of Huntingdon College falling 8-4 in the regular season finale for the Lions.
Four different Lions tabbed scores on the day as Huntingdon outshot the visitors 40 to 26 in the final regular season contest for both teams.
MICK BAKER took the loss in the cage for Piedmont allowing the eight goals while tabbing 11 saves, his 12th double-digit save performance in 15 games played this season.
SPENCER ORTIS finished with a team-high 10 shots scoring his only goal of the game in the 1st quarter.
Huntingdon (5-12) raced out to a 4-0 lead in the first quarter with Jakob Works scoring the first two of the game to spark the Hawks. Trailing by four less than eight minutes in, Piedmont would get a goal back with Ortis making good on a man-up situation scoring the Lions' first goal of the day to trim the home team lead to three.
The Hawks would end the first quarter ahead 4-1, but Piedmont would cut the margin to just a pair in the early going of the second quarter as
STEVE BLANCHARD put away a
SUMNER GANTZ pass for PC's second goal of the afternoon in Alabama.
Trailing now 4-2, Huntingdon tacked on another before the half to push the advantage back up to three goals as Works scored the third of his four on the afternoon with 9:40 to go in the second quarter. Works' four goals led all players in that category.
In the third quarter,
NICK GREEN scored his only goal of the day on an unassisted effort with 11:28 to play in the period, but the Hawks added two of their own to take a 7-3 lead into the final quarter in Montgomery.
Another unassisted goal by the Lions came just a few minutes into the 4th as
BRANSON MIKELL scored his 4th goal of the year, but it was not enough for the visitors as Piedmont scored one goal per quarter in the contest struggling to get an offensive streak started.
Piedmont falls to 4-11 with the loss in the regular season finale dropping eight of its last nine decisions after a two-game win streak earlier in the year.
