Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team had no trouble with local foe Toccoa Falls College in an 83-34 win earlier this afternoon on Senior Day.
After hoops star Jessie Jenkins was honored prior to the men's tip off, the Lady Lions honored their own lone senior with
CHANDLER ALVERSON being recognized before the Lady Lions defeated the Screaming Eagles by nearly 50 points.
Piedmont held Toccoa to just over 21% shooting from the field as the Eagles had only scored four points through the first 15:20 of the contest with PC leading 37-4. A jumper by Beth Brown made it 37-6, but the contest had largely been decided by that point as the Lady Lions picked up scoring from ten different players in the first half alone.
While Toccoa struggled to get much going offensively, the Lady Lions shot better than 46% on the afternoon connecting on 35% from distance and were solid from the charity stripe hitting on nearly 82%. PC was led in scoring by
BRIDGETTE KELLY and
TAYLOR SWOSZOWSKI who each had a dozen as the two combined to hit on 8-of-12 from the field overall.
Kelly also pulled down six rebounds on the day, one behind
BRIANNA BARRETT who led the team with her seven boards to go with her team-high seven assists. Barrett is just one assist shy of the league leader, Ballard from Maryville in that category.
The Lady Lions opened the contest on an 11-0 run not allowing Toccoa Falls to connect on a field goal until 4:23 had passed in the contest. Sullens scored six of the Lady Lions' first 11 as the scoreless run was capped by a
BRIANNA BARRETT three, her only three of the afternoon.
Piedmont picked up 13 points off turnovers in the first half forcing Toccoa Falls into 19 turnovers throughout the contest. However, the story came in the paint for PC where the Lady Lions outscored the Sreaming Eagles 44 to two.
Nearly 60 of Piedmont's 83 points came from the bench as the Lady Lions held a 44-12 lead at the break. Toccoa was able to keep it a 17-point difference in the second half, but the damage had already been done as PC earned the eventual 83-34 victory in Cave Arena.
For the Lady Lions, the win was the 19th of the season as Piedmont is now 19-6 overall, one win shy of a third 20-win season in the last five campaigns for Piedmont women's basketball and Head Coach Jamie Purdy.
