Lady Lions Move to 8-1 with 83-63 Win Over Meredith in USA South Play

Raleigh, NC - The Piedmont College women's basketball team was able to pick up a 20-point conference win on the road Friday night winning at Meredith College 83-63 as the Lady Lions jumped back into USA South play.

Piedmont saw two players post double-double performances including sophomore BRIANNA BARRETT who came up three assists shy of a triple-double which would have been the first in her collegiate career.

Six Lady Lions were in double figures, one of which was the second of two with a double-double in JULIANNE BAYER who posted 13 points and ten boards, her second straight double-double after a 21-13 performance in a win over Emory earlier this week.

Trailing by seven at the half, Piedmont was explosive in the second half outscoring Meredith 53-26 en route to a third straight win that puts them at now 2-0 in conference after a win over Mary Baldwin from November of 2014.

Meredith led by as many as 14 in the closing minutes of the first half until an 11-4 run from PC cut it to a 37-30 lead at the break.  However, Piedmont shot better than 60% from the floor as a team in the second period while holding Meredith to 27% to overtake the hosting Avenging Angels.

The home team did hold on to its lead until nearly midway through the second half, but a three-pointer from CARLIE SHIELDS with 10:41 to go put PC up for the first time since 13:57 remained in the first.

After a Jessi Hayes jumper tied it back up moments later, a BRIANNA BARRETT three put the visitors in front for good as Piedmont closed the game on a 28-9 run to thwart the upset-minded Avenging Angels.

Barrett had 13 points and ten boards like Bayer with ten of her points and eight of her rebounds coming in Piedmont's dominant 2nd half.  CARLY SALES was the scoring leader with 18 total points hitting eight of her 11 tries at the charity stripe.  Barrett also had a season-high seven assists, nearly half of Piedmont's total.

Also in double-figures was junior TAYLOR SWOSZOWSKI who led PC with her 60% (6-of-10) shooting from the field and led Piedmont in three-point shooting as well.

The Lady Lions will get back on the court tomorrow afternoon facing the Battling Bishops of North Carolina Wesleyan College in a 4:00 pm afternoon contest that will be the second of two in this trip through the Tar Heel State.
