Box Score Atlanta, GA - The Piedmont College men's soccer team was able to take a first half lead in Tuesday's matchup at Oglethorpe University only to see the Stormy Petrels storm back with two goals in the final 30 minutes to overtake the visiting Lions 2-1 in Atlanta. Piedmont (5-3) had several chances late to equalize but a pair of Lions could not get their shots through the stingy OU defense as the Stormy Petrels (5-4-1) claimed their first win at home this season while Piedmont dropped to 1-3 in true away contests in 2014.
Already tied for the team lead in goals so far this season, senior
Vincent Thomas put himself in sole ownership of the column's top spot for PC when he netted the Lions' only score of the day putting away a rebounded clearance on a Piedmont corner in the 23rd minute.
Thomas' goal was the only score of the first half as Piedmont held a 1-0 lead at the intermission. However, the home team tabulated scores in the 60th and 73rd minutes to reclaim the lead at 2-1 with just over a quarter of an hour to play in Atlanta.
OU outshot the Lions 24 to nine on the day but the Lions tallied two shots in the closing minutes that both had to be blocked by an OU defender to keep the visitors from equalizing. Oglethorpe also held the edge in corners nine to one taking six in the second half alone to put pressure on the Piedmont defense.
PC falls to 5-3 with the loss, the first in five games for the Lions who had a four-game winning streak heading into the afternoon, the longest such streak for the Green and Gold since the 2008 season. All three of Piedmont's losses on the season have come by just a single goal with two coming in 2-1 decisions.
The Lions will now jump back into conference play when they visit last year's USA South regular season champ and conference tourney finalist Methodist University this coming Saturday. Kickoff in the September 27 contest is set for 2:00 pm in Fayetteville, North Carolina.
