Box Score 2 Montgomery, AL - The Piedmont College Lady Lions began the USA South schedule with two victories Saturday over Huntingdon College and LaGrange College. The Lady Lions won in four sets against the Hawks 3-1 while sweeping the Panthers 3-0.
In the first match, the Lady Lions took the first set 25-19 before a tight second set 28-26 where PC was unable to outlast the Hawks. Piedmont was able to take the next two to seal the match 25-20 and 25-19 including a match-high 13 kills in the final set.
Leading the way for Piedmont was
Jennifer Opper with nine kills and posting a .318 attack percentage while both
Taylor Cramsey and
Kaitlin Norman posted 8 kills.
Xandy Green had a team-high 17 assists while
Katie Faith had an equal number of digs.
The series history between these two dates back to the Great South Athletic Conference days and since 2011, Piedmont had recorded six straight sweeps entering today against the Hawks. These teams will meet once more this season with the rematch coming October 26 at the Lady Lions' home in Demorest, GA.
In the second match, the Lady Lions swept LaGrange with a close first set 25-22, and took both of the next sets convincingly 25-14 and 25-13. Piedmont held LaGrange to only five kills in the second set combined with five errors.
Randee Harvel tallied nine kills in the match to lead the team while Norman added seven more.
Kait Steele and Green split the majority of the assists with 19 and 13 respectively, while Faith had 19 digs.
LaGrange was also a fellow GSAC member in the past and PC has won all seven contests between the two since the Lady Lions joined the USA South in 2012. Earlier this season the two met in Birmingham at the MckAttack Classic with Piedmont coming away with a 3-1 victory.
The Lady Lions will hit the court next Wednesday inside Cave Arena as they play host to Covenant College. This will mark the conference home opener Wednesday night with the match set to begin at 6:30 p.m.
