Box Score Marietta, OH - The Piedmont College men's soccer team picked up its first win of the 2014 season earlier this afternoon with a 2-0 shutout on the road over Bethany College out of West Virginia at the Marietta Soccer Classic. In their second game of the tourney hosted by Marietta College, Piedmont controlled the match with a 21-11 shot count in their favor scoring both of their goals in the second half to earn the victory over the Bison.
PC had a chance to get on the board just before halftime after a scoreless 42 minutes when
Vincent Thomas stepped up to take a penalty kick with just a few minutes to play before the break. However, a save by Bethany's Callum Appleby in goal prevented the Green and Gold from getting the first goal in the opening half putting the two scoreless at halftime.
However, the Lions did not stay dormant for long as sophomore
Chris Keller would convert on a second penalty given to PC with his score in the 55th minute putting Piedmont up 1-0 with 35 to play. Thomas would later avenge his miss on the PK in the first half when he put away a chance from just inside the box with 10 to play doubling Piedmont's margin and putting away the result for Head Coach
Jimmy Stephens.
Junior
Kenneth Hearn collected six saves between the sticks to pick up the shutout playing the full 90 in goal. The win is also his first of the season moving his record as a starter to 1-1 while the loss went to Appleby for the Bison.
Piedmont is now 2-2 in its last four non-conference games dating back to the 2013 season. The two-goal victory is the first multiple-goal victory since a 2-0 win over LaGrange in October of 2012 as all six of Piedmont's wins last season came by a single score.
The win puts Piedmont now at an even 1-1 on the season as the Lions will next play a weekend contest on Saturday night at The University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Sewanee took a 4-2 decision from the Lions in their last meeting coming at the Walker Athletic Complex in the 2013 season.
The match between the two this coming Saturday is set for a 6:00 pm evening start.
