Box Score Ferrum, VA - The Piedmont College baseball team got eight innings from starter
Matt Lisk, but the senior picked up little run support in tonight's 4-1 loss to Ferrum College on the road in USA South action. The Lions fall into a four-way tie behind conference leader Covenant College as a quartet of teams now have eight losses in conference play, including Ferrum and Piedmont.
Piedmont was held to just a single run on a trio of hits on the night as Ferrum starter Jake Perkins went nine complete fanning seven without issuing a single walk on the night. For the Lions, Lisk tossed eight frames striking out seven as well, but gave up four runs, two of which were unearned as PC made a pair of errors on the evening.
Ferrum picked up two of their four in the bottom of the second loading the bases for Ty Comer who drove a long fly ball to left that scored the runner from third. An error on the next at-bat by
Griffin Olson at short allowed another run to come in as PC would trail from that point on.
The Panthers added another in the fourth as a two-out single by Adam Duncan to right upped the advantage to 3-0 for the home team. PC got one back in the top of the 7th when
Daniel Lindsey scored on two outs for the Lions, but Ferrum matched the run with another in the 8th making it a 4-1 ball game headed to the top of the 9th, Piedmont's last chance to force the issue in game one.
With a 7-1 record on the season, Perkins took the mound in the 9th looking to finish his 5th complete game of the season needing just three more outs to do so. The Panther would retire PC in order to finish off the 4-1 win at home in the first of three between the two teams chasing Covenant College who sits at the top of the USA South standings.
The Lions' three base hits came from a trio who had one each in
Josh Bailey,
Will Skidmore, and
Keith Grabowski while Lindsey accounted for the lone Piedmont run. Starter
Matt Lisk took a loss on the mound for the first time in 2014 moving to 4-1 now in nine appearances for the Green and Gold. Piedmont has been outscored by 29 runs combined in the nine games that Lisk has taken the ball as a starter.
The loss drops PC to 22-12 overall as the Lions now sit at 14-8 in league play, tied with three other teams in the loss column in the conference standings. One of those three is Ferrum College while the other two are Huntingdon College and Methodist University. The Lions took two of three when visiting the Monarchs of Methodist and swept the Hawks of Huntingdon at Loudermilk in a 3-game weekend series.
Game two between the Panthers and the Lions is set for a 3:00 pm first pitch in Ferrum, Virginia. Fans can follow all the action with
