Box Score Birmingham, AL - The Piedmont College baseball team made it three for three in Alabama taking a 2-0 shutout win over Birmingham Southern College in an old fashioned pitcher's duel at Striplin Field. The two starting pitchers in the game combined to give up just five hits as the hosting Panthers suffered a loss for the first time in 2014 while Piedmont finished its showing at the school's tourney at 3-0 with wins over Birmingham Southern, North Park, and Millsaps who was the nation's 12th ranked team coming into the weekend.
Piedmont starter
Chris Goershel got the win on the mound going seven innings allowing just two hits while striking out four and walking just a single batter facing 24 on the night. Goershel took a perfect game into the 5th sitting down the first 14 batters he faced before a two-out single broke up the possibly historic night for the junior pitcher.
Birmingham Southern pitcher Miles Nordgren was not to be overlooked Sunday evening as he went six innings strong giving up just three hits and striking out four. Nordgren and Goershel gave a good show to the fans in Birmingham as the two combined to for 3-up, 3-down showings in the 4th inning of a game that would be decided by the smallest of details between a pair of teams garnering national attention after their starts to 2014.
The Lions got the run they needed in the top of the 8th when
Keith Grabowski got aboard via a shortstop throwing error advancing to second as the Lions had the go-ahead run in scoring position. After a
Josh Bailey infield single that advanced Grabowski to third, the Piedmont centerfielder would score on the next batter as another Panther error led to an unearned run and a 1-0 lead for PC.
In a game decided by inches, the Lions continued their ability to get the job done in the 9th when freshman
Griffin Olson singled in an insurance run plating
Michael Barnes to double the lead to 2-0 heading into the bottom of the 9th.
With just three outs to go,
Allen Tokarz, who had been called in for the 8th in relief of starter Chris Goeshel, continued to throw well sitting down the Panthers in order courtesy of a fly out to left and a pair of ground balls as the sophomore got his first save of the season and helped Piedmont close the door on a brilliant weekend in Alabama going 3-0 at the tourney held by Birmingham Southern.
Offensively, the five hits from PC were split up between
Zack Johnson, Grabowski, Barnes, Bailey, and Olson who accounted for the only RBI in the game. Olson has been Johnny-on-the-spot for PC accounting for seven RBIs in eight games to start his career with the green and gold.
Piedmont moves to 6-2 with the victory as the Lions finish a 3-0 weekend away from home. The Lions return to the friendly confines of Loudermilk Field this coming Friday night when they play host to visiting Greensboro College for their 2014 USA South opener with first pitch set for 7:00 pm.
