1st Half Sinks Lady Lions in 95-69 Loss to In-State Foe Berry College in Cave Arena

Demorest, GA - The Piedmont College women's basketball team could not overcome a dismal defensive 1st half and a standout individual performance from one of the Vikings as Berry College took a 95-69 win over PC in Cave Arena Tuesday afternoon.

Twenty-five 1st half points from Berry's Chanlir Segarra set the tone as the Vikings held a 21-point lead at the half and held off a spark from PC in the second half to move to 7-2 on the season while Piedmont picks up its first loss of the year.

Segarra was lights out from the floor in the first half shooting into an ocean rather than a bucket hitting on eight of nine tries from the field.  Putting her on the line did not stop the lights-out performance as she was also a perfect 8-of-8 from the charity stripe in the first 20 minutes.

Piedmont had no answer for the Segarra show in the first half falling behind 10-2 over the first four minutes with Segarra accounting for five of the first 10 for Berry.  Piedmont climbed back to within four (20-16) at the midway point following a layup from LE'SHAUNDA JONES as she would lead PC on the day in scoring with 25 points (10-of-15).

In the last match-up between these two, Piedmont held a 19-point lead at the half.  This time around, it was Piedmont trailing by double-digits at the half for the first time this season, down 51-30.

The second half saw a fired-up run led by the scoring of LE'SHAUNDA JONES as PC went from down 27 midway through the half to down just 14 with over six minutes to play courtesy of a crowd-pleasing 15-2 run.  With the score now 75-61 and still plenty of time remaining, Berry answered back with a Mel Mclean three-pointer to silence the crowd, and two more free throws from Mclean slowed the momentum of PC with the Vikings up 82-65 and just over three to play.

Berry stayed in front the rest of the way scoring 13 more over the final three minutes becoming the first team to put up 95 or more on the Lady Lions since LaGrange took a 102-80 decision back on January 20 of 2010.
The Lady Lions, now 5-1 on the year following the loss, will have the better part of the next two weeks off from competition for the holidays, but will return to campus for their own tournament hosted in Cave Arena with Emory University, Birmingham-Southern College, and Salem College all coming to town.

Piedmont will face Birmingham-Southern on December 29 with tip off set for 7:00 pm while Emory will open the tourney with a 5:00 pm game vs. Salem the same night.  The following day's opponents will be known after the December 29 opener, but the games will be at 5:00 pm and 7:00 pm once again.

All action over the December 29 and 30 tourney will be covered live on the Mane Event Broadcasting Network and also will be aired on WCON Radio online.
