Box Score Ferrum, VA – In their first USA South Conference match, the Piedmont Men's Soccer team were unsuccessful, losing 6-1 to Ferrum College. The Lions held the Panthers to a 1-0 deficit at halftime and brought the score to 2-1 early in the second but Ferrum opened up the scoring shortly after.
Both teams were evenly matched at the start, but Ferrum had an edge at home in the damp weather. The Panthers kept the ball in Piedmont's defensive end for much of the half with the Lions testing Ferrum's defense only a few times. Midfielder
Robert Williams had the Lions only shot on goal in the first half, saved by Ferrum's keeper. In the 38
th minute, the Panthers opened up Piedmont's defense on a counter attack and a threw ball was all they needed to get a one-on-one and score on the Lions before halftime.
Going into the second half, Ferrum came out aggressively. Their left midfielder found a chance to strike a ball and it slipped through the Lions defense into the net, moving the score to 2-0. Piedmont was down but not out though, as less than ten minutes of hard work later, the Lions earned a useful corner kick. Forward
Vincent Thomas struck the ball into the fray near post and midfielder
Connor Lockridge was there to strike into on frame. With so much going on in the box, the keeper didn't have a chance as the ball whipped past into the net, bringing the Lions back in contention at a 2-1 score.
The home team wasn't ready to give Piedmont any leeway as they counterattacked a minute later. Ferrum's left midfielder found another opening on the outside and his shot was enough to give the Panther's another strong lead. The rest of the game went Ferrums way as they scored three more in the next twenty minutes.
The scoreboard read 6-1 at the end of the game between Ferrum and Piedmont College. Piedmont's goalkeeper
Kenneth Hearn didn't make it easy for the Panthers as he made 10 saves on the day including three breakaway saves to keep the Lions fighting.
The Lions are now 0-1 in USA South Conference play. Piedmont's next match is tomorrow, Saturday, September 21, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. versus Trinity Baptist College at home in Demorest, GA.
