Greenville, SC -- The Piedmont Men's Soccer team was shaken early on by the Bruins of Bob Jones University and couldn't recover, losing 4-1 in front of nearly a thousand fans on the campus of BJU. The Lions gave up three goals in the first half before gathering a single score of their own in the second half.
In the first five minutes of play, the game appeared to be up for grabs. Both teams had chances with Piedmont nearly capitalizing on a counter attack in the Bruin's defensive third. Junior Vincent Thomas took the ball off a defender's foot and after beating another to the goal line, he crossed the ball in. Freshmen outside midfielder Kevin Posmer's run on the opposite side matched up with Thomas' ball but Posmer couldn't find his footing at the six yard box to finish, instead ripping a shot just over the crossbar.
Bob Jones University stepped up after the defensive error and gave Piedmont a tough first half. The first ball to hit the back of a net came off a Bruin's forward in the 26th minute. A well-timed through ball gave the Bruin's a one-on-one with Lions goalkeeper Kenneth Hearn who dove the right direction but couldn't get a hand on it. In the next ten minutes, the Bruins took advantage of the lead and increased it with two more goals giving Bob Jones University a 3-0 headstart going into halftime.
The Lions gave the Bruins a better show in the second half after going over their misfortunes in the first 45 minutes. Hearn stepped up and gave the Lions a fighting chance with several back-to-back saves early in the half. A quarter of the way in though, the Bruins struck again for their fourth and final time.
Although they were down 4-0, the Lions weren't out. Freshmen right back Dylan Krimmer and senior right midfielder Brendan Lister combined up the left side before threading a pass to freshmen forward Waldyr Pierre-Louis. Pierre-Louis deftly maneuvered past two defenders and with just the keeper to beat he struck a ball low into the left corner to set the final score in stone, 4-1.
With the third loss in a row for the Lions (0-3), the team will travel to Emory, Virginia this weekend for a south region game against Emory & Henry College. The Lions came away with a win at Emory & Henry last year and hope to use the knowledge to turn their record around. Game time is 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, September 15th.
