Box Score 2 Sewanee, TN - The Piedmont College volleyball team wasted little time getting off to a fast start in 2013 winning their first two games at the Sewanee Invitational earlier tonight. PC took down the University of Pikeville 3-2 in a hard fought match before rolling to a 3-0 shutout of Brescia University to wrap up the Friday night season opener.
In PC's first match of the evening, the Lady Lions found themselves in an all-out battle against Pikeville from Kentucky. The two squads fought through a five-set match that saw the two teams play tight in all but one set before Piedmont eventually took the winner in the decisive 5th by a 17-15 score.
"We would go up by four points, and they would catch up. They would go up by four points, and then we would catch up," said Feldman of the back-and-forth affair. "It was a very close match throughout, Pikeville had a very challenging team on the court against us tonight and we are happy to get the win."
Blasting on to the scene in her Piedmont debut was newcomer
Jackie Campbell who posted 18 kills with a .224 hitting percentage. Campbell's 18 kills led all players in the match as she accounted for almost a third of Piedmont's kills in the tight 3-2 win.
In Piedmont's second and final match of the night, PC cruised to a 3-0 win over Brescia taking each set by at least eight points. The Lady Lions won in three straight 25-14, 25-17, and 25-15, keeping the Bearcats at bay throughout the entire match.
Campbell once again led the team in kills with nine while senior
Ashley Fannon followed close behind with eight kills on just 11 total attempts, posting an outrageous .727 hitting percentage. Senior
Katheryn Knarr led the team for a second time on the night in assists with 17 against the Bearcats. Knarr had 24 earlier in the day in the 3-2 win over Pikeville though
Xandy Green posted 23 in that same match.
Sophomore
Katie Faith stepped up to fill the defensive hole left by graduating senior
Paige Eslinger from the 2012 squad as Faith tabbed 35 digs in the two matches. Defensive specialist
Jessica Hollis added in 26 digs to the cause while Knarr was second in the totals with 28.
