Box Score 2 DEMOREST, Georgia - The Piedmont College baseball team split a USA South Conference double header with visiting Averett University this evening taking game one 3-2 in dramatic fashion but dropping the nightcap 9-4. The Lions were able to take the opening game in walk-off fashion but could not contain the Cougars offense in the second en route to the split.
Averett jumped out with a single run in the first but the Lions quickly responded with run in the home half capitilizing on a Cougar error. In the third PC took the 2-1 lead as
Breck Davidson notched an RBI-single plating
Will Skidmore from third. Averett would knot the score at 2-2 in the sixth setting up the dramatic finish in the ninth.
With two outs and no one on
Keith Grabowski and Skidmore posted back-to-back singles before
Josh Bailey drilled a double to left field plating the game-winner.
Senior
Kevin Caldwell went the distance scattering 13 hits while striking out four and allowing zero walks for his fourth victory of the season.
In the second game Averett exploded with six runs on nine hits in the first two innings. The Lions answered with four runs on as many hits in the second cutting the deficit to 6-4. The Cougars would a single run in the fifth and a pair of insurance runs in the seventh to take full command. Piedmont could only muster seven hits and dropped the five-run decision.
Bailey led the offense going 5-9 with a walk, a pair of doubles and runs batted in respectively. Davidson added a 3-8 day with an RBI while
Evan Gresham chipped-in going 2-6.
The Lions, now 17-15 overall and 13-10 in the USA South, will play the rubber game of the three-game USA South Conference series with Averett tomorrow, April 7 at 2:00.
