Lions Finish Season With Hard-Fought 3-2 Win Over Emory

Senior Kevin D'Antignac led the Lions to a 3-2 win over Emory with 2 hits and an RBI in the final game of the 2013 season.
Box Score Atlanta, GA - The Piedmont Baseball team put runs on the board in three consecutive innings to come from behind and defeat the Emory Eagles 3-2. The Lions move to 22-22 to finish out the 2013 baseball season after defeating the Eagles twice in the three-game series this weekend.

Emory put the first run on the board in the bottom of the third. Iturrey doubled and moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on an RBI single.

The Lions would not leave the score unanswered when they took to offense in the fourth. Will Skidmore and Josh Bailey both singled to put runners on first and second. Senior Kevin D'Antignac's RBI single to left field brought Skidmore home to put the tying run on the board.

Emory put runners on second and third in the bottom of the fourth, but Lions pitcher Matt Lisk forced a ground out to exit the inning unscathed.

In the top of the fifth, Tate Koons singled and stole second. Matt Youtsey reached base on balls and Koons moved to third on a wild pitch. Keith Grabowski reached on a fielder's choice that saw Youtsey out at second and Koons reach home plate and give the Lions the lead.

D'Antignac singled in the sixth with one out on the board. Michael Barnes reached on a fielder's choice moving D'Antignac to second. Austin Brick struck a ball into right field sending D'Antignac around third and heading home but the Eagles throw reached  home playe before the runner. With two outs on the board, Garret Lovelace pinch-hit for the DH. Lovelace hit a groundball to short but it was bobbled, allowing him to reach first and Barnes to reach home, giving Piedmont the eventual game-winner.

Heading into the bottom of the ninth, Emory had no plans to give up the win so easily. Jacob Brewster came in to close for Lions and hit the first batter. The next two Eagles singled to load the bases and put Piedmont in a tough position with no outs. Brewster found his composure and struck out the next batter swinging. W. Peacock grounded out to short but not before one run made it home. The bases loaded again with a walk for Iturrey but victory wasn't in the cards for Emory. Brewster struck out the next batter swinging to end a dramatic ninth and game with his ninth save of the season.

Junior Matt Lisk earned the win, moving to 4-6 in the Lions last game of the season.

"Today was a great day for our seniors to finish up the season and their collegiate careers", said Coach Jim Peeples. "The coaching staff and I hope this win will be a springboard for our returning players in the 2014 season."

Piedmont's win moves them back to .500 on the season with a final record of 22-22.
