Box Score Montgomery, AL - Piedmont came out strong but couldn't hold the lead, losing 6-4 to the Hawks of Huntingdon College. The loss sealed the series 3-0 in Huntingdon's favor after today's game.
Josh Bailey started off the top of the first with a bang, hitting a two-run homer over the right field wall.
Michael Barnes followed up with a double and was score by a
Tate Koons single two batters later to give Piedmont a 2-0 lead early.
It took until the bottom of the third for Huntingdon to find their hitting. E. Agnew led off the inning with a homerun to put the first point on the board. Two more batters followed up with singles to put Piedmont in a tough spot. The next batter, C. Astin, found the right pitch and doubled to score both baserunners before the end of the inning, tying the score at 3-3.
In the bottom of the fifth, the Hawks put more runs on the board. An RBI single turned into bases loaded. The Lions maintained composure though, forcing a double play that allowed just one runner to score and one to reach third. Huntingdon's next batter blasted a ball into the outfield and RBI tripled to give them a 6-3 lead before the end of the inning.
Piedmont remained steadfast as the game progressed and set up a last ditch effort in the top of the ninth to comeback.
Colton Bryant and
Evan Gresham reached on an error and walk respectively. Right fielder
Josh Bailey dug in for his third hit of the game and RBI singled to put one run up but unfortunately, it was the last as the Hawks got the final out two batters later.
Matt Lisk received the loss in the contest, pitching five innings and striking out three.
Piedmont moves to 19-21 overall after losing the series at Huntingdon. The Lions will host Covenant College for one game this Tuesday, April 23rd at 7:00 p.m. before finishing up the season with a three game series against Emory University this weekend split between both campuses.
